The story behind NaturesGems
Hi, I’m Gemma Wren
I have been passionate about wildlife and the outdoors since childhood - spending my youth building dens in the park, taking canoe expeditions on the local canal and weekends out walking the family dog.
This passion steered me into my career and I have been fortunate enough to spend the last 20 years of my life working in nature conservation both in the UK and abroad - I've worked at Chester Zoo, studied fruit bats in the Indian Ocean, been a countryside ranger, and spent 13 years working for the National Trust, managing nature reserves and landscape projects across the North of England (including Morecambe Bay). I’m also a keen photographer.
Like many wildlife enthusiasts I was (still am) an avid David Attenborough fan and have been lucky enough to travel to parts of the world to see some of the incredible wildlife I grew up watching on screen. This has driven my passion to regenerate the connection between people and nature back on home turf.
The idea for NaturesGems grew from this passion and my own experiences of travelling the world to see amazing landscapes and wildlife.
I recognised the opportunity to share the hidden natural wonders of Morecambe Bay in the same way that other people have shared their amazing homes with me.
When I’m not out and about on NaturesGems tours I also run Wren ECOnsulting, putting my professional skills to work, supporting landscape scale conservation and partnership projects. Aiming to promote a collaborative sustainable approach to landscape management and nature recovery, creating a better future for people and nature.
